NOTICE - Current Road Restrictions due to Freeze/Thaw
The deep freeze and subsequent rapid thaw of the ground can cause the strength of the County Roads to be dramatically reduced.  Significant truck traffic in these conditions can cause very major damage.
The Columbia County Road Department has placed a 10,000 lb.weight restriction on many County Roads in the Clatskanie area.  Beginning Friday, January 20th, most other County Roads throughout the County, will have the same restriction.  The most significant of these roads are:

Canaan Road

Meissner Road

Pittsburg Road
Cater Road
Dutch Canyon Road
Keasey Road
Timber Road
Pebble Creek Road
Fishhawk Road
Fernhill Road
Nicolai Road above Nicolai Cut-Off Road
Alston-Mayger Road
Swedetown Road
Mayger Road
Collins Road
Woodson Road
Point Adams Road
Lost Creek Road
Stewart Creek Road
Shepard Road
Ilmari Road
Clatskanie Heights Road
and many other local access roads
Road Department staff will be posting signs with this restriction on Friday.

The following roads will not have weight restrictions placed on them:

Scappoose Vernonia Road
Apiary Road
Banzer Road
Hankey Road
Pittsbug Road section from Hwy 30 to Hankey
Beaver Falls Road
Quincy Mayger Road

The primary function of the Road Department is to maintain county roads. County roads are roads that have been dedicated to the public by adjacent property owners and then accepted by the Board of County Commissioners to be maintained by the county. State Highways such as Hwy 30 and Hwy 47 are not County Roads and are maintained by the Oregon Department of Transportation. Please see the "Roads" page for more information. The primary maintenance activities performed by the Road Department are, striping, brush cutting, snow plowing, sign maintenance, gravel road grading, vegetation management, paving, and bridge maintenance. Eighteen employees are dedicated to maintenance activities. The crew is on call 24 hours per day to remove fallen trees, plow and sand roads or mitigate any other potential safety problem.

Please take the time to review the presentations prepared by the Road Department on the activites and responsibilities that we are currently responsible for. The Road Department has prepared a long and short presentation.
